Research shows remarkable results: Ozonetech reduces fouling on osmotic membranes

In a recent collaboration between the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH) and Mellifiq, a research project was conducted to investigate the effects of ozone treatment on osmotic membrane fouling. The results are in and can be found in the publication “Low-Concentration Ozonation as a Feed Pretreatment Strategy to Reduce Organic Fouling in Pressure-Retarded Osmosis” by Matteo Tagliavini and Matthäus Bäbler at KTH.

The research project called “Blue Energy” was funded by the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) and Mellifiq together, with the aim to increase the water flux over time through osmotic membranes by minimizing fouling. By increasing the water flux, the window for energy production with a pressure-retarded osmosis plant increase, thus making the process more efficient.

To investigate this, experiments were made with fouling acids and natural surface water combined with different ozone dosages. The full equipment for the experiments was designed and provided by Mellifiq, and further discussions throughout the project made this a successful collaboration.
